Candle Magic Color Meanings
I get this question A LOT. You are sitting down to do a spell but what color is the best or correct color to use? Well, in truth, you can make this as simple or as elaborate and intentional as you would like! Historically speaking, colored candles are a new age addition to candle magic. Witches and humans didn’t always have colorful candles. At one time, the only color available was beeswax. lol Witchcraft encourages you to use what you have available to you. Still, we now have colored candles and that provides an opportunity to add even more intention into our spell work.
The short and simple answer is drumroll… use white! White is an acceptable substitute for any color of candle you need or want. When in doubt or running out, use white. White also represents purification, protection, healing, clarity, and new beginnings. I have also seen some witches use black as a substitute for any color as black is comprised of all pigments mixed together so it is considered an acceptable substitute for any color by some. When it comes to using black or white candles as a substitute for other colors, I say use your discernment and trust what feels right to you.
Now, since there are over 16.8 million colors that the human eyes can perceive we have quite a few options available to use. Yes, different shades of various colors changes the magickal association of each color. For example, blue is often used for emotional healing, protection from evil eye, peace, and truth (notice there is overlap here with the properties of white). Whereas light blue is associated tranquility peace, communication, understanding, promoting positive moods and lifting spirits. There are also double action and other types of multicolored candles such as our double action reversal candles. These types of candles use two or more colors to accomplish more than one goal in 1 singular spell candle.
In a pinch I have successfully used unexpected colors in my spells. Once, I needed to do a money spell but only had pink candles and no way to get anymore until the next day so I used the pink candle. This worked just as well as the green I typically use. Why? I realized that pink is for, among other things, attraction, and so utilizing a pink candle in my money spell helped to attract clients and money to me. I strongly encourage you to NOT box yourself in. Get creative, find loopholes, create solutions.
